Abstract

A large number of commercial software systems are available for design, production and process planning specialized on various applications. Although much effort has been spent on the integration of individual systems under the umbrella of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), there are still gaps in the different steps from product idea to NC program. From the author’s point of view many implementations can still be described by the Y-Model of Scheer [1]. The Y-Model distinguishes two main streams in a factory organization. On one hand order-oriented tasks have to be performed and on the other hand product-oriented tasks. Order-oriented tasks are production planning and control (PPC) functions, for example order control or capacity planning. Product-oriented tasks include product design, process planning and NC programming. The concepts presented consider the integration of product-oriented tasks as well as order-oriented tasks.
