Abstract

Hanser explores how treatments, formerly known as alternative and complementary medicine, set the stage for the evolving field of integrative health and medicine. The philosophies and tenets behind integrative health hail from ancient healing traditions and contemplative wisdom around the world. Yet advances in technology and psychoneuroimmunology are also informing the healthcare community that mind and body are intimately connected and that an eclectic network of treatments can guide the process of becoming well. The knowledge that stress has a major impact on health and wellness, as well as the course of disease, supports this attention to the mind-body connection. Music therapy provides effective tools for management of stress, and music therapists are becoming part of integrative medical teams throughout the world.
