Integrating ICT-supported flipped classrooms for comprehension and critical analysis in English literature education: A literature review
This literature review integrates information and communications technology in the context of English literature literacy instruction to carve deep understanding and critical analysis skills in learners. Flipped classrooms are analyzed for learner self-direction, thinking skills application, and sophisticated text engagement as per 21st-century educational shifts. Peer-reviewed research conducted from 2015 – 2025 was synthesized to study the integration of Information and Communication Technology in flipped classrooms and literature teaching for higher education. It challenges disparity in digital resource availability, attitudinal and competency issues of teachers toward technology, and the relevance of ICT resources to adopted pedagogy. This review explores the role of professional learning, organizational change, and collaboration in learning design toward the resolution of these issues. Despite the robust affordances of flipped classrooms for student engagement and higher-order thinking skill development, ICT-supported pedagogy optimized for engagement requires more deliberate efforts toward harnessed educator or lecturer willingness, planning, and adaptable implementations. The findings enhance recommendations for the reform of English literature curricula and demonstrate the promise of flipped learning in the teaching of English literature.

The problem and the aim of the study. Higher-order thinking skills is a very popular concept in education field around the world. Among the broad range of higher-order thinking skills, recent studies are concentrating on fostering higher-order thinking skills in education. The number of related publications demands a bibliometric study for finding the keywords, sources, countries, and research clusters. And the study carried out a bibliometric analysis of the relevant publications on higher-order thinking skills from Scopus database between 2011 and 2020. Research methods. A visual system of top keywords in higher-order thinking skills research has been produced by analyzing of keywords co-occurrence. And by using bibliography inquiry, the most common topic of blended learning has been found. This study also investigates the recent publication trend of higher-order thinking skills in blended learning. Results. The annual number of publications demonstrates an uptrend in the area of higher-order thinking skills, and the publication rates have increased distinctively in 2018 and 2019. Indonesia and the United States have already become the two major research centers while Malaysia and Australia are joining the research circle in the near future. Related publications had been related to the field of education and metacognition from the very beginning in 2016, and then to the field of higher education, critical thinking and assessment, followed by active thinking and learning in 2017, and eventually to blended learning and flipped classroom in 2018. The systematic structure shows that the United States and Korea have more papers from joint efforts than other countries. In particular, Korea became the most collaborative country. The Journal of Physics: Conference series has signified an increasing occurrence in publications on Higherorder thinking skills in blended learning with “student” acting as the most influential word. Fostering higher-order thinking skills cultivation in flipped classroom and scaffolding higher-order thinking skills activities in learning approaches are both crucial areas involved. In conclusion, the quantitative analysis on higher-order thinking skills through bibliometric study has revealed the recent subfield of blende learning. Thus, the dataset is further refined by blended learning, considering publication year, sources, countries and organizations, keywords and topics. The annual output of publications on higher-order thinking in blended learning have risen in the past ten years, showing it is more likely to keep developing in the near future.

This study aims to shed some light on the significant impact of content videos in flipped learning classroom on students’ higher order thinking skills. The secondary aim of this study is to portray students’ perception toward the practice of flipped learning in assisting their higher order thinking skill development. A total of 36 elementary teacher education students at IAIN Surakarta are involved as participants in this pre-experimental study. Drawing on pre-test, post-test, and focus group discussion, the results of paired sample t-test show a significant difference on the students’ score of pre-test and post-test, meaning that flipped learning with content videos is effective to enhance the students’ higher order thinking skills. Furthermore, the focus group discussion reveals that the students positively perceive the practice of flipped learning instruction to enhance their higher order thinking skills. These results contribute to providing fruitful insights for teachers and school administrators as a teaching model to enhance students’ higher order thinking skills.

This study aimed to overview learning strategies to create learning innovation that can improve students' high-order thinking and communication skills in science learning. This research was classified as a systematic review. The data used in this study was secondary. This study's 15 secondary data sources consist of books, proceedings, and scientific articles in reputable journals. The data analysis using Miles & Huberman analysis technique. Data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The result of this study is that problem-based learning and inquiry-based instruction is learning strategies that can improve students' high-order thinking skills. The learning strategy that can improve students' communication skills is problem-based learning. High-order thinking skills and communication skills can influence each other. It was hoped that with this research, innovative learning centered on learning models and learning media could be developed so that students have high-order thinking and communication skills with good categories in future education.

The advent of innovative online tools has ushered in new possibilities for enhancing the quality of language learning. This study delved into the influence of the flipped classroom approach on augmenting the cognitive and meta-cognitive competence of EFL learners. Two distinct participant groups were enlisted for the study's sequential phases, necessitating varying sample sizes to compare the effects of the flipped classroom against traditional instructional modes on the improvement of EFL learners' self-regulated learning strategies and higher-order thinking. Homogeneous groups of language learners were essential for addressing the research inquiries, and participants were selected from two private language institutes in Arak, Iran. Multiple data sources, including a language proficiency test, the Self-Regulation Questionnaire, a flipped classroom attitude questionnaire, and the Higher-Order Thinking Skills Test, were employed to gather the necessary data. The results demonstrated a significant impact of flipped classrooms on learners' utilization of cognitive self-regulated learning strategies, indicating that the flipped classroom approach fosters students' development as self-directed learners. Concerning the influence of the flipped classroom on enhancing EFL learners' higher-order thinking skills, it was deduced that the flipped classroom significantly affected the learners' engagement in evaluating, analyzing, and creating. The implications of these findings underscore the potential of the flipped classroom approach to positively shape EFL learners' self-regulated learning and higher-order thinking skills, advocating for its incorporation into language education practices.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of investigation group learning model based on Marzano’s instructional framework in improving students’ higher order thinking skills. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental method with the matching only control group pretest-posttest design. Here, the data were collected through observations, questionnaires, and tests. The tests consisting of limited and extensive tests aim to analyze the effectiveness of the investigation group learning model based on Marzano’s instructional framework in improving students’ higher order thinking skills. The results of the study showed that the majority of students (>75%) have an increased level of higher order thinking skills (critical and creative thinking skills). It was proved by the results of statistical analysis where the sig. value < 0.05 and t(table) > t(count) .Thus, H0 is rejected meaning that there is a significant difference on students’ higher order thinking skills before and after applying the investigation group learning model based on Marzano’s instructional framework in the teaching and learning process. Then, if it is classified, the improvement of students’ critical and creative thinking skills is included into the medium category. Hence, it can be concluded that the investigation group learning model based on Marzano’s instructional framework is effective in improving students’ higher order thinking skills in social studies learning.

The development of e-schoolbag offers a valuable platform to the development of pupils' higher-order thinking skills. There are certain functions of e-schoolbags such as virtual simulation, cognitive tools, instant feedback, and learning portfolio, which can be used to cultivate the higher-order thinking skills of learners. This study describes a teaching practice with the use e-schoolbag in which the development of the higher-order thinking skills was studied by a quasi-experimental research. The data showed that such teaching practice with the application of the e-schoolbag could promote significantly the higher-order thinking skills of primary school students, especially the analytical skill and the evaluation skill.

It is very important to adopt innovative digital technologies in educational systems to overcome the challenges in modern learning environments, especially in the post-COVID-19 era. The fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda is supported by new educational trends that consider game-based learning as a pedagogical method in the classroom. Teaching sustainability management in higher education institutions with innovative digital tools plays a fundamental role in the transition toward sustainable societies. Suitable game design elements play a significant role in facilitating sustainable learning. This study explored the effectiveness of incorporating business simulation games with project-based learning (PBL) in a flipped classroom setting. This approach was adopted within the context of a university cross-border e-commerce course to prepare students for acquiring 21st-century skills such as higher-order thinking skills in a rapidly changing educational landscape. A quasi-experimental method was employed, involving a total of 60 university students from China’s Zhejiang Province. Participants completed an online questionnaire designed to assess their learning engagement across three dimensions (cognitive, emotional, and behavioral) as well as their higher-order thinking skills (problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity). The results show that the business simulation games combined with flipped classroom learning had a significantly positive impact on students’ learning outcomes, enhancing their problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative capabilities. Importantly, this approach also improved student engagement and promoted sustainable practices by applying real-life scenarios in an interactive environment. We conclude that business simulation games integrated with project-based learning (PBL) in flipped classroom settings represent a valuable educational approach. This approach not only enhances learning engagement but also fosters the development of higher-order thinking skills, encouraging students to adopt sustainable learning practices.

The higher-order thinking ability of students in Indonesia is still in the low category. This research aims to see the effect of the application of a problem-based learning model on higher-order mathematical thinking skills in terms of student's initial abilities and mathematical beliefs. This research uses a quasi-experimental design with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. Data on students' higher-order mathematical thinking skills were taken using a test instrument. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 27 Jakarta with a total of 165 students obtained from cluster random sampling. Based on the analysis of the three-way ANOVA test, it was found that the problem-based learning model had a positive effect on students' higher-order thinking skills. Problem-based learning model gives better results than conventional learning models. This also applies to students with the initial ability and mathematical beliefs in the high category. Problem-based learning can be an alternative for teachers to improve students' higher-order mathematical thinking skills.

The information-based society determines that the key factor to achieve success is the development of sophisticated thinking. That said, the thinking process cannot be just a mere imitation of cognitive work, since the digital age requires the authentic skills of working with a flow of information that is being constantly updated. This paper deals with the last stage of the study devoted to the development of sophisticated thinking. It focuses on the enhancement of higher order thinking skills. We claim that the cognitive processes should be based on three phases: development of disposition towards both thinking process and processed information; development of lower order thinking skills which serves as an indispensable basis for developing higher order thinking skills; and development of higher order thinking skills. The omission or reordering of any of these phases may result in significant deterioration of the obtained results. The special emphasis is put on the idea that higher order thinking skills are more effectively developed when lower order thinking skills have already been interiorized. Furthermore, the development of disposition is regarded as the cornerstone of the development of sophisticated thinking in general. Also, due to its defining feature of polysemy, a literary text is considered to be the most appropriate basis for enhancing students’ thinking skills. For the purpose of verifying the theoretical ideas, a qualitative study has been conducted. The two groups of students, who participated in the first and second stages (three-month cycle each) of our project, continue to be involved in this one. They are second-year bachelor students of the Higher School of Economics who are studying English as a second language. On the basis of the ideas expressed by B. Bloom about the division between lower and higher order thinking skills and by J. Mezirow about transformative learning we designed tasks to enhance higher order thinking skills. These tasks were related to the short stories written by D. Barthelme and printed as a collection, Sixty Stories. To teach the students of both groups (control and experimental), the text-based approach with special techniques to measure the students’ level of understanding and the ability to apply the given information was used. The results of the experiment indicated that the students of both groups made headway in their application of thinking skills. However, the students of the experimental group demonstrated a more significant shift due to the fact that the development of their disposition towards cognitive processes and processed information had been specifically targeted over the course of the first and second stages of the project. Another important outcome of the study was that the participants’ frame of reference was extended which allows us to speculate that the development of sophisticated thinking may result in the change of a person’s interpretation of socio-cultural situation. Hence, a further in-depth study of the issue should be conducted.

The flipped classroom approach has been reported to enhance higher-order thinking skills in chemical engineering students, as evidenced by studies conducted over the past decade. These skills are crucial for addressing environmental issues and developing innovative solutions. However, many students struggle to articulate their thoughts and opinions on given topics. The flipped classroom method allows students to prepare in advance and make the most of their learning time, as outlined in the course information. This study aimed to evaluate student achievement and perceptions of the flipped classroom method, comparing it to the conventional teaching method to determine its effectiveness in improving higher-order thinking skills. A quantitative approach was employed, involving pre-tests and post-tests for unbalanced groups. Data analysis included mean calculations, paired t-tests, and ANCOVA tests. The results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in student achievement between the flipped classroom and conventional teaching method groups. However, the ANCOVA test revealed that the treatment group showed an increase in higher-order thinking skills. Additionally, students perceived that the flipped classroom improved their knowledge, encouraged creative thinking, and reduced the time required to learn. Despite both methods enhancing thinking skills, the flipped classroom was more effective in helping students answer questions systematically and concisely.

The lack of training in higher-order cognitive thinking skills in physics makes most students of class XI MIPA in a high school in Marabahan unable to solve problems that require the ability to analyze (C4) and evaluate (C5) well. This study was intended to describe the effectiveness of using the web-integrated CinQASE learning model to train higher-order thinking skills in the C4 and C5 domains. This study used the pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The efficacy of the web-integrated CinQASE learning model to train higher-order thinking skills is calculated with the eta-squared effect size for a paired sample t-test. In contrast, the description of students' achievement in higher-order thinking is viewed from the percentage of the average score of the student learning outcomes test on items that have C4 and C5 domains. The results showed that using the model had moderate effectiveness (η2 = 0.94) and helped train students’ ability to think at a higher level, as shown by an increase in students’ achievement in higher-level thinking in the good category. Thereby, the use of the web-integrated CinQASE learning model can supply considerable benefits in training students’ higher-order thinking skills. These results also write down a practical need for teachers and schools to implement learning approaches that use the potential of technology to enhance learners’ higher-order thinking skills in the 21st century.

Learning skills include the ability to learn or acquire basic knowledge and concepts across multiple dimensions, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, creative thinking, and decision-making.This work presents an assessment approach intended for evaluating and assessing students’ higher-order thinking (HOT) skills. The assessment of higher-order thinking skills includes four subthinking skills, i.e., problem-solving, critical thinking, creative thinking, and decision-making. The proposed assessment of learning skills involves proposing questions (e.g., focus questions) to support student thinking and learning activities to guide the development of thinking skills while completing assignments, solving problems, or engaging in learning activities. The proposed skills assessment method consists of a quantitative approach that comprises two levels of assessment. For the first level of evaluation, graded assignments will be used to assess learning outcomes. In the other evaluative level, learning skills are assessed independently through scoring based upon how students respond to classwork and homework assignments using the skills' supporting questions. Learning skills are evaluated as to the extent to which students comply with the given proposed questions for focusing thinking and the extent to which these questions assist students in the completion of assignments. A skills assessment approach can be used to evaluate skills without interfering with the typical learning activities of a given assignment. It also does not interfere with the assessment process and learning outcomes.

In this era the use of information communication technology in every walk of life is not a lie especially its use in education to facilitate the process of teaching and learning. The objectives of study were to explore the practice of ICT among students at university level, to examine the level of higher order thinking skills among students at university level and to find out the effect of information communication technology on the development of higher order thinking skills among students at university level. The study contains proposed model which was based on ICT tools and HOTs. The researcher used quantitative approach, and its design was correlation which is a type of descriptive research. Population was based on undergraduate university students of social sciences of 3 universities of Islamabad. Convenient sampling technique was used. The sample was based on 10% of entire population. The results were interpreted, and recommendation were suggested. The study results showed average level of higher order thinking skills among university students. Results also showed that mean values were agree about the practice of ICT at university level. It was revealed that there was a significant effect of ICT on the development of HOTS at university level. It is recommended that through training, practice and classroom activities the students may be able to find the required information, to analyze it and to build HOTS. Universities may recruit highly skilled technical personnel in the ICT units of their institutions and create a consciousness in them to develop innovative ideas for better training of student’s higher order thinking skill
