Abstract
The idea of an integrated management of coastal zones receives increasing attention from scientists as well as planners and governments from coastal nations in all parts of the world. Originally developed in the context of sustainable development and sustainable environmental planning, ICZM is of increasing interest to regional planning agencies with a traditional focus on regional economic and infrastructure development issues. This paper discusses the potential of the ICZM approach for sustainable economic, ecological and social development of coastal areas and its contribution to the tasks of spatial planning institutions and programmes from a methodological point of view.
