Abstract

This tutorial provides information about the principles underlying power network instrumentation and measurement systems, identifies new instrumentation technologies and highlights new developments in the area of industry standards. The subjects addressed include the equipment used by technicians, the instrumentation used for laboratory experiments, transducers permanently connected in power apparatus, current transformers, potential transformers, coupling capacitor potential devices (sometimes referred to as coupling capacitor voltage transformers, state-of-the-art sensors (including photonic and microsensors) and their application in customer metering, data acquisition systems, sampled data systems, signal conditioning and processing, the analysis of noise and data errors, digital interfaces, GPS synchronized measurements and programmable controllers.
