Abstract

For three years now, institutions of higher education and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, or CSAS) have been trying to solve problems that had developed in their relations over the previous 40 years. These problems are mainly based on the concentration of a substantial part of science and research in the Academy of Sciences, separated from teaching provided by institutions of higher education. Both sides are looking at solutions from a variety of viewpoints. Naturally, there are those who want to preserve the status quo, while others would rather dismantle everything connected with the past and start again from scratch. What is most important is that the majority of both representatives and staff of the two institutions are seeking mutual understanding as the basis of an effective solution and fruitful collaboration in future.
