Abstract

Porous calcium hexa-aluminate (CA6) ceramics have been in-situ synthesized by heating calcium hydroxide and alumina powder/aluminum hydroxide powder. The influence of aluminum source and sintering temperature on calcium hexa-aluminate grain growth and porosity was studied. A significant feature was noticed that the CA6 grains maintained the original skeleton of aluminum source as a whole, but individual CA6 grain formed a plate-like shape. Moreover, we proposed a three-step growth mechanism for the formation and further development of the plate-like CA6 grains.
