Abstract
The causes of bites and stings are extremely wide and varied, and for that reason it is necessary to restrict them in this article to those most likely to be encountered in primary care. Animal and human bites tend to be treated in accident and emergency departments initially, but painful, swollen and itchy skin lesions caused by insect bites and stings are a common reason for consulting the practice nurse during the summer months, sometimes as an emergency.
