Abstract

Purpose: To examine the influence of the supervisor’s leadership and psychological empowerment on the innovative behavior of workers in the tourism sector.Methodology: The study employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a non-experimental design with an explanatory focus. Data from 386 workers in tourism firms based in Mexico City were analyzed using partial least squares equations modeling.Findings: Supervisor leadership influences innovative behavior. However, psychological empowerment supersedes this influence since workers attribute meaning to their work, value their competencies and demonstrate autonomy are more inclined to foster, promote and implement innovations.Practical implications: The findings are useful for managers and decision-makers who wish to implement strategies aimed at fostering innovative behavior in their workers.Originality: Evidence from the Mexican context is presented, and an adapted and extended measurement scale is provided.
