Abstract
The evidence from a variety of experimental techniques for formation of outer and inner sphere complexes of f-element cations with inorganic and organic ligands, is reviewed. The very weakly basic ligands favor outer sphere complexation although the value of ligand pKa at which inner sphere formation becomes favored increases with metal cation charge density (z/r). The need to understand the limitations of different methods for measuring stability constants in evaluation of outer versus inner sphere complexation is emphasized.
