Abstract

RECENT evidence supports a direct involvement of transcription in the DNA replication of E. coli1,2, phage λ3 and phage M 134,5. Transcription of the replication origin appears to be essential for the initiation of a new round of DNA replication. However, all the systems mentioned have particular disadvantages; for example, DNA replication in these systems also requires protein synthesis and since a transcriptional block also inhibits protein synthesis, setting up experiments and interpretation of data can be difficult.
