Abstract

A theory of infrared spectra of hydrogen bonds in hydrogen halides which crystallize in zig-zag chains formed from hydrogen-bonded HX units is presented. Theoretical spectra computed for HF, HCl and HBr are in good agreement with experiment in both the frequency and intensity distribution. Spectral changes introduced by deuteration are quantitatively reproduced.
