Abstract

Globally, stroke represents the second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of death and disability combined, with the annual number of strokes and deaths due to stroke increasing substantially over the past 30 years (by 70% and 43%, respectively).1 Without urgent implementation of population-wide prevention strategies, the stroke burden will likely continue to grow, particularly in low and middle-income countries.1,2
