Abstract

We study the causal relation between the segmented electrode and electrolyte leakage and gas crossover using a visualization technique for which the cost of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells systems would decrease. If the segmented electrode was applied to MCFC, there are three kinds of combination of the division parts about the electrode-electrode, the electrode-cell frame, and the electrode-cell frame-electrode. The electrolyte leakage of these division parts and the effectiveness of the segmented electrode are examined by the visualization technique and the cell test. As a result, in either case of an anode and cathode, the electrolyte leakage from the division part of electrode-electrode and the gas crossover could not be ob-served by the visualization technique. Though the electrolyte leakage is observed from the division part of electrode-cell frame, it disappears within one week. Therefore, the application of the segmented electrode to MCFC is effective.
