Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of cardiovascular death. The optimal duration of anticoagulant therapy for a first unprovoked VTE is uncertain. Deciding whether to continue anticoagulation indefinitely after completing at least 3 months of initial treatment, requires balancing the long-term risk of recurrent VTE if anticoagulation is discontinued with the long-term risk of major bleeding if anticoagulation is continued. We previously showed that men with a first unprovoked VTE have a higher long-term risk of recurrent VTE than women (Khan F et al., BMJ 2019).
