Abstract

<title/>Direct metal forming (DMF) is an advanced manufacturing technology, which can build full density metal parts directly from CAD files without using any modules or tools. The investigation on the influence of laser waveform features on the accuracy using open loop DMF process is introduced in this paper, which was studied by numerical simulation and experiments using DMF system. The results show that the temperature and temperature gradient of molten pool change greatly when the cladding is heated by square and sine waves; however, the temperature and temperature gradient of molten pool are steady when it is heated by continuous wave. The laser cladding heated by square wave mainly depends on the peak power. Under the same process conditions, the laser cladding heated by square wave only requires smaller average output power, which can improve the accuracy of DMF by reducing the heat input and heat affected zone.
