Abstract

Sewage sludge is a good source of plant nutrients and organic matter but heavy metals present in it can be harmful to plants, animals and human life, when applied to soils. The availability of heavy metals to plants depends upon the PH, organic matter, moisture content, temperature and aeration of soil. Some plants are more tolerant to these metals than others. Both sludge and soils must be examined physically and chemically for the safe application of sludge on soil. The application rate of sludge is different for unamended and amended soils. Cadmium accumulation in vegetation is more and can present serious food chain hazards. Other heavy metals can also pose health hazard to human and animal life since they can be up taken by plants grown on soil receiving sewage sludge. Forest trees are especially suitable to be grown on such lands.
