Abstract
1. The time-to-rupture of PMMA tested under the same stresses in air and in a vacuum of 10−6 mm Hg is the same. 2. The time dependence of the strength of notched PMMA specimens in an active liquid medium is not strongly pronounced. 3. The time-to-rupture of PMMA can be either reduced or increased under the influence of an active liquid, the effect of which depends upon the applied stress level and the magnitude of the stress gradient. The mechanism of fracture of PMMA in contact with active liquids is determined by the relative values of the rate of crack propagation (Vc) and the rate of surface diffusion of the liquid.
