In this article, we present the quantitative and qualitative results of a study aimed at describing the influence of a teaching sequence that integrates grammar and children’s literature on the interest in grammar among 34 Grade 4 Fransaskois students (approximately 10 years old). The sequence, which focused on the imperative sentence, revolved around the reading of two picture books in which this grammatical concept is used extensively, as well as various instructional methods (sentence sorting, writing in the style of the author, etc.) designed to help students observe how an imperative sentence is constructed. Quantitative results, collected through a Likert-type questionnaire administered before and after the sequence, show a significant and positive evolution in students’ interest in grammar. Qualitative data, collected through individual interviews conducted after the sequence with a subsample of 25 students, align with the quantitative results, showing strong student interest in the selected children’s books and in the methods used to help them observe the targeted grammatical concept.

Ambivalence in Adolescents’ Alcohol Expectancies: A Longitudinal Mixed Methods Study Among 12-to-18-Year-Olds
  • Feb 3, 2023
  • Journal of Adolescent Research
  • Janne Scheffels + 5 more

Drawing on the framework of alcohol expectancies and their importance for drinking behaviors, this longitudinal mixed-methods study examined changes and continuities in the development of alcohol expectancies during adolescence. Quantitative and qualitative data were prospectively collected at four time points between 2015 and 2020 from nationwide, socio-economic, and gender-balanced samples of Norwegian adolescents aged 12–18. Quantitative data ( n = 3425) were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models, and qualitative data ( nT1 = 118) using thematic analysis. Quantitative and qualitative results were juxtaposed in the discussion. Quantitative results indicated an increase in social facilitation and tension reduction expectancies from age 13 to 18, and a simultaneous decrease in negative emotional expectancies. This development could partly be explained by experience with alcohol use in adolescence. Similarly, qualitative findings showed adolescents’ expectancies of alcohol evolving with age, from one-sided negative expectancies of aggression and harm to increased positive expectancies of fun, sociability, and relaxation. Both analyses showed that negative expectances remained high throughout the study period, but by late adolescence, many participants held positive and negative expectations simultaneously. The qualitative data illustrated how adolescents’ alcohol expectancies became increasingly ambivalent and complex with age, as alcohol use became more common. Prevention strategies aiming to reduce underage alcohol use should acknowledge this complexity.

Testing the Dependability of Results Generated from Kouzes and Posner Leadership Practices Inventory
  • Jun 3, 2025
  • Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal
  • Charlie Carvajal

The primary goal of my research is to test the dependability of results generated from Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) of Kouzes and Posner when cross-examined with qualitative data particularly the observations, document analysis, and interview. School heads, master teachers, teachers, and non-teaching school personnel from three (3) schools in Polomolok District 2, Division of South Cotabato, took part in this study. I used a mixed convergent research, where this allowed the quantitative method to be compared to qualitative methods to assess the dependability by the use of meta-inference. It prevailed that the generated quantitative results in school 1 and school 2 were found dependent with the qualitative results. Conversely, in school 3, a contrast between quantitative and qualitative results was revealed. Overall, by the use of meta-inference, the quantitative results were generally dependent when compared to the qualitative results in the view of democratic landslide. By rigorously testing the dependability of Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) results, I contributed to validate and improve leadership assessment, guaranteeing that this LPI instrument offers reliability when used in multiple research methodologies. It is recommended that longer time frames may use for future research, utilizing quantitative methods such as statistical reliability testing to monitor leadership development across time.

Influence of Modifiers, Extractants, and Trappers on Lipid Composition with Liquids in Standard State Extraction, Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Trapping by Supercritical Fluid Extraction, Part II
  • Jan 1, 2017
  • International Journal of Analytical Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography
  • Ilia Brondz

Modifiers have a broad array of influences on extraction with liquids in standard state, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), trapping by SFE and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). They can significantly change the qualitative and quantitative results. Quantitative and qualitative results can be influenced by different extractants and modifiers in different ways as it was shown by Brondz et al. at 2007 in “The real nature of the indole alkaloids in Cortinarius infractus: Evaluation of artifact formation through solvent extraction method development”, J. Chromatography A, 1148, 1-7. The choice of correct extractant, modifier, and trapper to the bulk mobile phase for supercritical fluids (SFs) or for liquids in subcritical or in the liquids in standard state is a challenge in any extraction procedure. This is the second paper in a sequence that describes the influence of extractants and modifiers on the performance of SFs and results of extraction with liquids in standard state and SFE. Here, attention is given to possible mistakes in qualitative and quantitative results by poor understanding of the influence of extractants, modifiers, and trappers on extraction and trapping process by a careless choice of extractant, modifier, and trapper for extraction with liquids in standard state and SFE. The SF chosen for discussion in the paper is CO2. However, similar effects can be observed with use of other SFs and fluids in subcritical and standard states. In this paper, the discussion of lipids, fatty and carboxylic acids have been chosen as target analytes for extraction, trapping and analysis. Some examples from extraction with liquids in the standard state and trapping in the supercritical state (collection) have been furnished with the wrong extractant, modifier, or trapper which is presented for illustration of inappropriate choice of extractants, modifiers, and trappers.

  • Clara Andrés-Gárriz + 5 more

Young people with autism have support needs related to self-determination that are currently not adequately addressed in Spain. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness, implementation, and acceptability of a program to support self-determination for young adults with autism in Spain. A multicenter, mixed methods randomized controlled trial (RCT) study was conducted (2020-2022). Young adults with autism between 17 and 30 years of age were recruited, and 40 were randomly assigned to the intervention or waiting-list group. Quantitative and qualitative data on outcomes relating to self-determination, program implementation and acceptability were collected at baseline, during, and after the intervention using several tools, including the SDI: SR and focus groups. Joint displays were used to integrate the quantitative and qualitative results for a comprehensive evaluation of the program. The quantitative results revealed no significant differences between the intervention and waiting list groups but indicated positive impacts on agentic actions and overall self-determination as reported by participants and caregivers. The qualitative results expanded the quantitative results by identifying personal and contextual barriers and facilitators of self-determination while offering deeper insights into the quantitative outcomes. Implementation fidelity was high, and the qualitative data provided areas for improvement and identified challenges and best practices. Program acceptability was high, and the group format proved useful. Our study provides the first empirical evidence of an intervention designed to promote self-determination in individuals with autism in Spain, but further research is needed. This trial was retrospectively registered at www.clinicaltrial.org (NCT05938751) on January 1st, 2023.

Analyzing the Impact of Loss Functions on Dehazing Effectiveness and Unveiling the Discrepancy between Quantitative and Qualitative Results
  • Apr 26, 2024
  • Journal of Advanced Research in Applied Sciences and Engineering Technology
  • Ali Murtaza + 3 more

The work focuses on the analysis of the impact of loss functions on the effectiveness of a model for dehazing images. Dehazing, the process of removing haze or atmospheric scattering from images, plays a crucial role in various computer vision applications. To enhance the performance of dehazing models, it is essential to examine different loss functions and their variations. In this study, we employ a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) as our model and evaluate the performance of various loss functions. The primary objective is to assess how well each loss function is capable of dehazing an image, while specifically investigating the influence of various structural similarity index (SSIM) loss variations on the dehazing effectiveness. Our experimental results reveal a notable discrepancy between qualitative and quantitative outcomes. Contradicting the traditional interpretation in literature, our qualitative analysis reveals that the SSIM IQA metric may not be a fully reliable indicator of dehazing effectiveness despite it being viewed to be correlated to human visual perception unlike Mean Square Error and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio Metrics. Moreover, we demonstrate that relying solely on quantitative results may lead to the selection of an inappropriate loss function. This finding emphasizes the significance of qualitative analysis in evaluating the performance of dehazing models. The disparity between quantitative and qualitative results emphasizes the need for newer image assessment metrics in the domain that can effectively bridge this gap. Such metrics should be able to be better correlated with human perception. This research contributes to the field of image dehazing by shedding light on the importance of qualitative analysis in addition to quantitative evaluation. By comprehensively analysing the impact of variations of SSIM loss functions and their combination with Mean Absolute Error (MAE) loss, we provide valuable insights into enhancing the effectiveness of dehazing models.

“As long as you learn to adapt”–a longitudinal mixed-methods study exploring the first decade with rheumatoid arthritis
  • Mar 24, 2025
  • BMC Rheumatology
  • Maria Bergström + 4 more

BackgroundEarly diagnosis and modern treatment have changed everyday life of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, symptoms are still pronounced several years after diagnosis. The aim of this study is therefore to synthesise the perception of everyday life in men and women with contemporary treated RA over the course of the first decade after diagnosis. This will be achieved by comparing subjective experiences with quantitative measures of disability and disease activity.MethodsA longitudinal convergent mixed method was used. Thirty-one patients, clinically diagnosed with RA and ≥ 18 years of age, were recruited from the TIRA-2 project in southeast Sweden. Patients were followed over a decade regarding disease activity (DAS28), grip force (Grippit), pain intensity (VAS mm) and activity limitations (HAQ). Participation in valued life activities (VLA-swe) was assessed 10 years after diagnosis. The patients took part in individual interviews three- and ten-years post-diagnosis. Quantitative data were analysed through descriptive analyses and linear mixed models. The interviews were analysed using directed content analyses. The results from the quantitative and qualitative analyses were integrated in accordance with the chosen design.ResultsDiscrepancies between the quantitative and qualitative results were revealed, along with differences between sexes. Women expressed more problems related to disease activity and grip force, which did not coincide with the quantitative results. In fact, women experienced difficulties in activities despite decreased disease activity. Furthermore, their pain score changed quantitatively over time, which was not expressed in the interviews. These disconfirming results were not seen in men. Both women and men displayed confirming results regarding activity limitation. Some issues, such as with basic needs, were more visible quantitatively than through interviews.ConclusionsMen and women with contemporary treated RA still experience disability a decade after diagnosis. Additionally, patients’ experiences and quantitatively measured outcomes do not always coincide. The qualitative data adds information and thereby complements the quantitative data on disability. Our results confirm the importance of person-centred rehabilitation in optimising patients’ possibilities for participation in everyday life.Clinical trial numberNot applicable.

The impact of leadership and management capacity on municipal service delivery in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality
  • Apr 1, 2018
  • Joseph Qhinaphi Mhlaba

This thesis is about an investigation of the impact of leadership and on service delivery in Bushbuckridge local municipality in Mpumalanga province. This study looked at the internal and external factors that affect service delivery in Bushbuckridge Local municipality (BLM). Bushbuckridge local municipality has had some service delivery challenges over the years which affected its ability to deliver services. In 2013, BLM was placed under administration in terms of section 139 (5) (a) of the constitution of the republic of South Africa due to the collapse of service delivery. Local government is one of the arms of government located closest to the citizens and constitutionally tasked with the responsibility of delivering basic services to the citizens. Failure to deliver these services has a direct impact on the day to day lives of citizens. Poor service delivery or the lack of it thereof has often triggered service delivery protests. This study is therefore an effort to look at how municipal officials, councillors and ward committee members’ leadership and management capacity contribute to poor service delivery in Bushbuckridge local municipality. To explore the challenges affecting service in BLM the following research questions were used: • Do ward councillors; proportional councillors; and municipal officials; have the appropriate skills to execute their work effectively? • Do the municipal officials have an understanding of the underlying factors affecting service delivery in Bushbuckridge local municipality? • What organizational/institutional factors affect service delivery in Bushbuckridge local municipality? • How do environmental factors affect the delivery of services in Bushbuckridge local municipality? vii • How effective are the ward committees as a platform for public participation in the affairs of local government? • How does the leadership capacity of ward committees impact on their contribution to service delivery? • What is the link between leadership, management capacity and service delivery? This study was conducted using mixed research methods where qualitative and quantitative data was collected. Data was collected using a face to face method by the researcher using a paper based data collection tool. A total of 67 Participants from the Bushbuckridge local municipality were enrolled into the study. The qualitative data was analysed used Stata, while the qualitative data was analysed using Atlas.ti. The quantitative results have been presented in the form of graphs, pie charts and tables while qualitative results have been presented according to themes where similar responses have been grouped together. The findings are discussed in chapter six to establish the relationship with the research questions of this study. A number of conclusions based on findings are drawn in chapter seven which is the final chapter of this thesis.

  • Hani Badran + 2 more

BackgroundThe Information Assessment Method (IAM) allows clinicians to report the cognitive impact, clinical relevance, intention to use, and expected patient health benefits associated with clinical information received by email. More than 15,000 Canadian physicians and pharmacists use the IAM in continuing education programs. In addition, information providers can use IAM ratings and feedback comments from clinicians to improve their products.ObjectiveOur general objective was to validate the IAM questionnaire for the delivery of educational material (ecological and logical content validity). Our specific objectives were to measure the relevance and evaluate the representativeness of IAM items for assessing information received by email.MethodsA 3-part mixed methods study was conducted (convergent design). In part 1 (quantitative longitudinal study), the relevance of IAM items was measured. Participants were 5596 physician members of the Canadian Medical Association who used the IAM. A total of 234,196 ratings were collected in 2012. The relevance of IAM items with respect to their main construct was calculated using descriptive statistics (relevance ratio R). In part 2 (qualitative descriptive study), the representativeness of IAM items was evaluated. A total of 15 family physicians completed semistructured face-to-face interviews. For each construct, we evaluated the representativeness of IAM items using a deductive-inductive thematic qualitative data analysis. In part 3 (mixing quantitative and qualitative parts), results from quantitative and qualitative analyses were reviewed, juxtaposed in a table, discussed with experts, and integrated. Thus, our final results are derived from the views of users (ecological content validation) and experts (logical content validation).ResultsOf the 23 IAM items, 21 were validated for content, while 2 were removed. In part 1 (quantitative results), 21 items were deemed relevant, while 2 items were deemed not relevant (R=4.86% [N=234,196] and R=3.04% [n=45,394], respectively). In part 2 (qualitative results), 22 items were deemed representative, while 1 item was not representative. In part 3 (mixing quantitative and qualitative results), the content validity of 21 items was confirmed, and the 2 nonrelevant items were excluded. A fully validated version was generated (IAM-v2014).ConclusionsThis study produced a content validated IAM questionnaire that is used by clinicians and information providers to assess the clinical information delivered in continuing education programs.

  • Çiğdem Nilüfer Umar

The purpose of this research is to explain the effects of the qualitative results obtained from the data which is gathered from the interviews with gifted students and their parents regarding the screen use of gifted students between the ages of 12-18 on the potential screen addictions of gifted students. This study is mixed methods research. The rationale for choosing mixed methods research is complementarity, based on the fact that results from quantitative and qualitative data clarify and detail each other's results. For the research, explanatory sequential/ (sequential quantitative → qualitative) mixed methods research design was used. Quantitative data of the study were collected through a questionnaire created by the researcher from a group of 160 gifted students aged 12-18 and 100 parents. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed by ratio and frequency analysis. In the light of the findings obtained from the quantitative results, structured interviews were conducted with 16 gifted students and 17 parents with purposeful sampling from the research group. Content analysis technique was used in the analysis of the data obtained from the interviews. Quantitative and qualitative research results were brought together in the mixed methods study and the results were integrated. The findings of the research were explained under sub-headings such as the duration of screen use before and during the pandemic, the number of technological devices used, the time spent in front of the screen, the purpose for which this time was used, and the effects of the time spent in front of the screen on students. With the pandemic, the time spent in front of the screen has increased, the duration of sleep has increased, the purposes of using the screen have changed, and the situation of being uncomfortable and unhappy in case of not being able to reach the screen has increased. As a suggestion to this situation, it is suggested to carry out awareness raising activities for families and children.
