Abstract

The effect of temporal aggregation on the relation between inflation and variability of relative-price changes in the United States is studied by using monthly consumer price index (CPI) data as well as quarterly observations derived by averaging the monthly series. Estimates from monthly and quarterly data show major differences for the periods 1973–1986 and 1980–1986.
