Abstract

The theory basic to the solution of problems in infiltration and redistribution of water in porous media has been evolved and experimentally verified. As yet, application of this theory to the solution of field problems has been limited. If comprehensive solutions to hydrologic problems, including water pollution, are to be obtained, the theoretical base established by the soil physicist must be employed. In most instances heterogeneity of the system has been a formidable barrier to the solution of such problems. Therefore, most studies have dealt with homogeneous, isotropic, one-dimension, semi-infinite systems with vertical flow and a constant initial water content throughout the profile.
