Abstract

Having recently watched and corrected several nurses for carrying various receptacles with their fingers dangling inside, it is with interest that the following points were made in the BJN over 100 years ago. Among several practical points highlighted on antiseptic methods, one related to the different methods of carrying a basin of sterile water. Two diagrams, the first of which showed the thumbs touching the inner surface of the basin and thus the incorrect way to do the task, the second showing the correct way to carry the bowl with the hands and particularly the fingers entirely outside.
