Abstract

An historically unappealing and appalling topic riddled with taboo, infanticide, also coined as a cousin to eugenics, is a type of child homicide or the killing of a child in his/her first year of life by a parent, as compared to filicide, the murder of an older child by one of his/her parents. Maternal infanticides are infrequent events; however, when they do occur, a number of cases fall within the framework of a postpartum mental illness. The term infanticide is commonly used interchangeably with homicides of children under the age of five. Infanticide and filicide by both males and females are explored.
