Abstract
This paper focuses on identifying and describing instances of inequality and discriminatory practices based on gender at the World Universities Debating Championships in Spanish (CMUDE) from 2018 to 2022. The study combines an analysis of tabulation data with in-depth interviews conducted with members of the Equity committees. The results reveal widespread gender-based inequality in the participation of both debaters and judges, with non-men individuals participating less frequently than men. Additionally, persistent disparities were observed in the competitive performance of debaters and judges, to the detriment of non-men participants. Lastly, numerous discriminatory practices were identified that disproportionately affect non-men individuals. These include biases in the evaluation of academic performance, the expression of pejorative comments, and instances of sexual harassment.
