Abstract
ABSTRACT Industrial museums are often viewed as a means of supporting economic development, chiefly through the expansion of tourism which in Scotland is still heavily dependent on scenery. The development of industrial museums in Scotland has lagged behind that in England and attendance figures are substantially lower. Industrial museums, which in Scotland are concentrated chiefly in or near urban centres in the Central Lowlands, utilise historical industrial sites, displays of traditional industrial processes and industrial artefacts in thematic collections and reconstructions of social, industrial and urbanhistory; all types are represented in Scotland. Most industrial museums are owned and operated by private individuals or trusts. Although many have been successful in obtaining funds from central- government agencies for capital purposes in the name of economic development, operating support has been more difficult to obtain on a long-term basis, the Manpower Services Commission and local authorities...
