Abstract

AbstractA large gap exists between the commitment to technology, system configuration, life‐cycle cost and available knowledge about the impact of these commitments during system operation. This gap is particularly acute during conceptual and preliminary system design. More powerful approaches are needed to narrow the gap. This paper presents a paradigm for indirect experimentation based on normative models form the field of operations research. The paradigm proceeds from the identification of design dependent parameters which link design characteristics and operational outcomes. When applied during conceptual and preliminary design, this linkage helps to reduce the gap between knowledge and commitment. The normative models provide a basis for system optimization early in the life cycle.
