Indigenous knowledge-based tsunami disaster mitigation strategies in South Lampung coastal areas, Indonesia
This study examines how coastal communities in South Lampung, Indonesia, integrate indigenous knowledge with GIS-based spatial analysis to enhance tsunami resilience. Findings show that 42% of settlements are in high-risk zones, and combining traditional practices with structural mitigation improves preparedness, offering a replicable model for disaster risk reduction.
South Lampung Regency, located in southern Sumatra, Indonesia, records a high disaster risk index score of 176.14, with its coastal areas acutely exposed to tsunami hazards. Historical evidence of the 1883 Krakatoa and the 2018 Anak Krakatau tsunamis, which caused 118 deaths and extensive infrastructural losses, underscores the urgency of comprehensive mitigation efforts. This study adopts a qualitative ethnographic design integrated with geographic information system (GIS)-based spatial analysis to examine how coastal communities in Kalianda and Rajabasa transform indigenous knowledge into practical resilience strategies. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participant observation and satellite image–based land-use mapping. The spatial analysis classified six vulnerability zones and revealed that 42% of settlements remain within high-risk coastal buffers. The findings indicate that local communities complement structural mitigation, such as breakwaters and evacuation sites with culturally embedded practices, including interpreting natural warning signs, reinforcing communal solidarity and intergenerational transfer of evacuation knowledge. Contribution: The research contributes an integrated vulnerability map that merges structural, environmental and socio-cultural dimensions, demonstrating that the fusion of indigenous knowledge and scientific spatial assessment substantially enhances tsunami preparedness. These insights provide a replicable model for policymakers and disaster risk-reduction practitioners in similar coastal regions.

Climate change poses a tangible threat to the agricultural sector, which is highly dependent on weather and climate conditions. South Lampung Regency, one of the agricultural centers in Lampung Province, faces serious challenges including declining productivity, shifting planting seasons, and increased risk of crop failure. In this context, farmers’ understanding of climate change risks and the ways they receive and interpret related information are crucial in supporting local food security. This study addresses the gap in understanding how risk communication can play a key role in shaping farmers’ perceptions and adaptive responses to climate change. Using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative data, this research involved in-depth interviews, surveys, and participatory observations with farmers, community leaders, and agricultural extension agents in Panengahan and Bakauheni Districts. The findings reveal two main typologies of farmers’ perceptions—traditional-reactive and adaptive-informational—each with distinct patterns of information access and adaptation strategies. Risk communication pathways are dominated by a mix of informal (social media, peer discussions) and formal (extension services, government programs) channels, yet a gap remains between the information provided and the farmers’ practical needs. The study proposes a locally grounded risk communication model that integrates scientific information with traditional knowledge, aiming to enhance adaptive capacity and strengthen food security.

This article examined the contribution of indigenous knowledge to disaster risk reduction activities in Zimbabwe. The current discourse underrates the use of indigenous knowledge of communities by practitioners when dealing with disasters’, as the knowledge is often viewed as outdated and primitive. This study, which was conducted in 2016, sought to examine this problem through analysing the potential contribution of indigenous knowledge as a useful disaster risk reduction intervention. Tsholotsho district in Matabeleland, North province of Zimbabwe, which frequently experiences perennial devastating floods, was used as a case study. Interviews and researcher observations were used to gather data from 40 research participants. The findings were that communities understand weather patterns and could predict imminent flooding after studying trees and clouds, and the behaviours of certain animal species. Local communities also use available local resources to put structural measures in place as part of disaster risk reduction interventions. Despite this important potential, the study found that the indigenous knowledge of disaster risk reduction of the communities is often shunned by practitioners. The practitioners claim that indigenous knowledge lacks documentation, it is not found in all generational classes, it is contextualised to particular communities and the knowledge cannot be scientifically validated. The study concluded that both local communities and disaster risk reduction practitioners can benefit from the indigenous knowledge of communities. This research has the potential to benefit communities, policymakers and disaster risk reduction practitioners.
