Abstract
The English language, right from the colonial regime, has an intriguing connection with caste. This chapter raises the question, how caste, a subject so real and an issue so urgent, has been discussed or problematised, presented or represented, contextualised or reflected in contemporary Indian Commercial Fiction in English. Another central enquiry in this chapter is: Why has caste escaped the imagination of the Indian commercial fiction writers? A bird's eye view of the works of select leading Indian English Commercial Fiction writers is used to answer the abovementioned questions. In India, everyone is a slave of the caste system and caste norms and caste duties are of paramount importance, even more than national or ethical duties, but the Indian Writing in English cloaks caste in a discursive intellectuality that is nothing but a renewal of age-old profits from the new political, economic and technological regimes.
