Abstract

The majority of diverticula of the middle and lower esophagus are asymptomatic and usually detected on an upper gastrointestinal series performed for other indications. A case of esophageal diverticulum, first detected during a nuclear gastric emptying procedure in which persistent retention of activity was noted in the mid-esophagus, is reported. Esophageal diverticulum was confirmed on an upper gastrointestinal series. This serendipitous scintigraphic finding during a gastric emptying study is not believed to have been reported previously. The diagnosis of esophageal diverticulum should be considered when persistent retention of activity is noted in the esophagus.
