Abstract

SummaryA survey of Sturmer Pippin apples showed that 4% of the crop produced natural mutations, most commonly in the form of very small segments of altered skin. More than 30 variations in skin characteristics were classified. In addition to expected changes such as red coloration, there were variations in ground colour, skin lustre, skin thickness, amount and kind of russet and segmental furrowing. The value of such a survey of small mutations for indicating the probability of finding and stabilizing larger useful bud sports is discussed.
