Abstract

Based on a case history we discuss the concept of long-term aftereffects of sexual abuse in childhood. We point out the necessity for including other diagnostic considerations beyond merely identifying the occurrence of incest in the patient's life history. We attempt to show that there is no clear relationship between incest in childhood and subsequent adult psychopathology. Childhood incest victims are a heterogeneous group therefore diagnostic and etiologic considerations must include more than just incest alone. The authors reflect on research and hypotheses indicating a possible link between incest and borderline personality disturbance.
