Abstract

Shoot tip explants of 20 ornamental cultivars of Ericaceae were cultured in vitro for 4 weeks on Anderson (1984) medium with the addition of benzyladenine (BA) (0–10 mg l −1) or isopentenyladenine (2iP) (0–20 mg l −1). Number of shoots formed and the most effective concentrations for shoot proliferation varied with species and cultivar. BA treatment resulted in necrosis in six cultivars. 2iP treatments gave consistently more shoots than BA treatments. The results suggest differences between Ericaceae and other plant families with respect to mode of action of different cytokinins.
