Want to bring new life—and new learning—to your arithmetic class? Try this interest-catching technique. Simply ask twelve students to come to the front of the room. These are your live models who will demonstrate all kinds of arithmetic concepts. First of all, ask them to arrange themselves in any way they wish. Then call on a child from the group at their scats to supply the mathematical sentence that describes the situation they are seeing. It might be 8 + 4 = 12, or 4 + 8 = 12, or 12 − 4 = 8, or 12 − 8 = 4. At this point, ask the models to rearange themselve, and again ask the rest of the class to make a true statement about what they sec.
