Abstract

In situ small angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been performed on three carbons, which adsorb methane, and a zeolite, which does not adsorb methane, loaded with CD 4 at pressures of 0, 0.4 and 0.8 MPa. SANS is sensitive to CD 4 adsorption. The change in the shape of the scattering patterns can be interpreted by an increase in methane density within the pores and the change of the scattering curves at high q suggests that the density of the adsorbed CD 4 depended upon the local pore size. Estimates of the adsorbed density were in broad agreement with previous theoretical studies.
