Abstract

RECENT years have seen mounting evidence of the decline of vitality and prestige in older (i.e., traditional, established, or sectarian) Buddhism in Japan. Studies have appeared ranging from attitude surveys by a government ministry and full-scale sociological studies by Japanese and Western scholars to reports on student views in Buddhist universities. Studies of the last type may be summarized as follows to provide a succinct indication though by no means a full representation of the current crisis within traditional Buddhism in Japan:
