Abstract
This paper examines the concepts of leakage, tourist dollar flows and social exchange by analyzing historical accounts of ‘conventional’ processes of tourism development in Africa found in the tourism literature. It argues that within the context of many Sub-Saharan African economies, ‘conventional’ tourism may actually be more suitable for the developed world than African countries. Suitable alternative perspectives of development in are suggested.
