Abstract

I WILL ARGUE THESE MAIN POINTS: (1) that the most recent (even though, by now, well-established) trend in the teaching of composition entails a radical shift from the traditional focus and methodology; (2) that this trend reflects a view of human experience which is best explained by popularized Sartrean existentialism; (3) that this philosophical orientation is both inappropriate for teachers of communication skills and potentially dangerous for students; and (4) that Martin Buber's thought points the way toward an alternative which is neither a return to the past nor a continuation in the present direction.
