Abstract

Persson G. In praise of ignorance. Notes on the dynamics of development as psychotherapist.Learning psychotherapy is often associated with resistance and negative feelings, such as anxiety and aggression. Possible reasons for these reactions are feelings of inferiority, the stresses and strains of having to give up old and find new adjustments, and the discovery of previous mistakes and thus feelings of guilt towards patients who have received less than optimal treatment. If the therapist resorts to rationalization and denial to hide his shortcomings, he makes growth impossible. The major point of the article is that the joy of discovery and expansion is far greater than the inevitable negative feelings and that guilt is inherent in the condition of the never-finished development of the therapist.
