Abstract

This article outlines the key changes in practice arising from the updated 2010 resuscitation guidelines in relation to in-hospital resuscitation, including prevention of cardiac arrest. It is useful for any health-care professionals with a responsibility to provide direct care to patients within acute and critical care environments to have knowledge of the advanced life support algorithm to enable them to anticipate the needs of the team and be effective participants. One of the main themes of the updated guidelines is to ensure that continuous, effective chest compressions are maintained throughout the resuscitation attempt and interruptions are kept to a minimum.
