Abstract

After New York City legalized cannabis, more pets have been getting sick from it after eating discarded joints in parks and other public places, The New York Times reported last month. Veterinarians have reported seeing cases more frequently. Symptoms include loss of balance, difficulty walking, nausea, sleepiness and hallucinations, according to the Feb. 13 report. Dog owners already know to keep their pets away from eating trash and other potentially poisonous substances, but this is new. And as we continue our weekly forays into New York City, we see many professional dog walkers with multiple dogs on leashes all along Park Avenue, many of the walkers on their phones, and the stench of “skunk” in the air everywhere. It lingers on our clothes on the train on the way home. We have to keep our own pets away from real skunks out in rural New York, but it never occurred to us that all these years after the wonderful 1960s we would have to worry about city dogs getting sick from marijuana.
