Improving TOEFL Listening Proficiency through Targeted Intervention: A Pre-Experimental Study
This pre-experimental study aimed to address a research gap in TOEFL preparation for English Education Department students at UIN Raden Intan Lampung, who face significant challenges in English proficiency, particularly in listening. Utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design, the study implemented a short-term, targeted instructional intervention over three online meetings via Zoom. The intervention, based on a needs analysis, used a custom-designed TOEFL module focused on listening strategies. The results from a paired-samples t-test on official ETS TOEFL Listening test exercises revealed a statistically significant improvement in scores, with the mean post-test score (M=37.48, SD=3.34) being significantly higher than the pre-test score (M=30.30, SD=3.89), with p=0.000. This indicates that even a concise, targeted intervention can effectively enhance listening skills among these students, providing a foundation for developing more effective preparation programs and future, more robust research.

“Your score is high; my score is low. How can I make it higher?” The author heard this in students’ conversations after they received their pre-test scores in the TOEIC training course. This is the major reason the author decided to conduct this study. Using the TOEIC score as part of the graduation requirements, the university designed and provided an English preparation course, namely EG1001: English for Proficiency Preparation, for students before taking the test. This small-scale research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the test preparation course in enhancing students’ English language proficiency and to explore which specific skills non-English major students need to improve for the TOEIC test. The study used pre-and post-tests to collect the language proficiency outputs of 57 higher education students in this course. Additionally, the study used their mini-test scores from each unit of the learning material to track their progress. The findings revealed that the post-test mean score (48.96) was higher than the pre-test mean score (40.58), indicating that after participating in this course, the participants improved their English proficiency. The results also suggested that students needed to practice more on the listening part of the TOEIC test.

To improve students’ self-regulation skills toward accomplishing science-related tasks and workloads, this study was designed to determine the effect of a science learning coach as an intervention program on student self-regulation skills. This quasi-experimental study determined the mean pre-test and post-test performance of Grade 10 students under the Special Science Curriculum. This research used a non-random purposive sampling procedure to select the respondents. The research instrument used in this study was a 35-item test questionnaire aimed at measuring the self-regulation skills of the respondents. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) using t-test for independent samples to compare the pre-test and post-test mean scores before and after the implementation of the intervention program, respectively, and using paired samples t-test to determine the difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the experimental group. Also, an analysis of covariance was used to determine and evaluate whether the means of the dependent variable are equal across levels of a categorical independent variable. This research study revealed a significant difference in terms of pre-test and post-test mean scores before and after the implementation of the intervention program using t-test for independent samples. This also showed no significant difference in the experimental group's pre-test and post-test mean scores using a t-test for paired samples. However, using pre-test mean scores as covariates, it was revealed that there is a significant difference in the post-test results of tests between subjects.

Introduction:Peer-assisted learning has been shown to be an effective teaching and learning method. However, this technique has not been proven in Thai medical school. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of peer-assisted learning and self-study in interpreting an electrocardiogram in Thai medical students. Methods: This is a prospective, randomized controlled trial, conducted in Chonburi teaching hospital, a community hospital affiliated with Chulalongkorn University. All medical students from the fourth and fifth years, a total of eighty students, were randomly assigned to two groups of peer-assisted learning (PAL) and self-study (SS) via stratified randomizationdone by computer-generated randomization. The two groups were matched for sex and grade point average. In the PAL group, teaching was performed by the fourth and fifth year medical students. We conducted five weekly study sessions. Different topics of electrocardiogram interpretation were assigned to tutors for teaching. SS group would separately study the same topic on their own.Constructed response questions were used to assess the students at the beginning as a pre-test and after a five-week session as a post-test. Online self-assessment was delivered to students one month after the study. Results: Mean pre-test and post-test score was put into the analysis and compared across groups using t-test. No significant difference in pre-test score was observed between the two groups in the same academic year. There was a significant difference between the mean post-test score between the fourth year PAL and SS groups. Also, the mean difference score in the fourth year PAL group was higher than the fourth year SS group. However, in the fifth year group, there was no significant difference between the PAL and SS groups in the mean post-test score and mean difference score. Conclusion: In conclusion, peer-assisted learning is an interesting method to improve understanding and interpreting skills of basic ECG better than self-study in the early clinical year medical students.

Medical education has been facing unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic leaving aftermath, which needs continuing reparative work. Imperative to exploring solutions faced by Covid pandemic challenges, various immediate steps were taken by medical schools globally including the faculty development activities transformed into online strategies. Workshops are the most common methods of the FDA to enhance knowledge and skills in specific areas of teaching and learning and assessment. A retrospective analysis of three of the TBL online FDA workshops is presented to determine its immediate impact on teaching and learning as well as an assessment model using pretest and posttest designs of a 3-point Likert scale of participants attending a half-day online workshop during the Covid19 pandemic for faculty development in a teaching hospital in Malaysia. Data was collected and analysed using online links created in Microsoft Google form at the beginning and towards the end of each workshop on a 3-point Likert scale of agreed, disagreed and not sure. A 15 items questionnaire was administered with additional information of participants’ trends in studying the reading materials sent out a week prior to the actual workshop. An interventional strategy between the two tests were four plenaries and a break-out session with hands-on group work followed by presentations. A collated quantitative data was gathered from 82 participants attending the online TBL workshops. Data were analysed using the statistical test of paired t-test, one-way ANOVA and ANCOVA with effect size in SPSS version 24. The percentage correct pretest and posttest score difference was significant at p = .013. The mean difference between pretest and posttest scores was significant at t = 31.345, p < 0.01. A significant difference in mean scores between groups was found, F (2,79) = 4.923, P = .010 using one-way ANOVA. Post-hoc analysis revealed significantly high posttest mean scores compared to partially read and not read groups at p = .033 and .014, respectively. However, the difference between partially read and not read was insignificant. A difference in mean posttest scores among the three groups using one-way ANCOVA on removing the effect of pretest was found significant at F (2, 80) = 6.211, p = 0.003. The effect size using Cohen’s d and Partial Eta Squared have a large practical effect of 2.072 and a moderate effect of 11.1% and 13.70% shown in paired t-test, ANOVA and ANCOVA respectively. A significant difference in the mean pretest and posttest scores was found between the groups. A post-test score, controlling on pretest score, was also significant, with a large Cohen’s d and moderate practical effect size suggesting an effectively delivered TBL online workshop. Keywords: Faculty development, online workshops, pretest, posttest design, quantitative evaluation, team-based learning
