Abstract

* Knowledge of the basics of quality improvement is essential for orthopaedic surgeons practicing in the era of health-care funding reform.* Quality improvement allows multidisciplinary teams to identify gaps in clinical care by comparing current care with established best practices.* Teams set at least 1 goal for improvement, perform root cause analysis, and develop a set of change ideas.* The team selects a set of appropriate measures and undertakes incremental tests of change using the Model for Improvement.* Once improvements have been realized, gains must be sustained. Monitoring ensures that care does not revert to previous patterns.* Fostering a culture supportive of change and involving a wide range of stakeholders is critical throughout this process.
