Abstract

Background: Southend University Hospital (SUH) delivers emergency radiotherapy for patients with metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC). Referrals may be received from SUH itself, or from hospitals in Basildon and Chelmsford. Patients are transferred to SUH from the referring hospital, undergo computed tomography (CT) planning and delivery of radiotherapy (usually single fraction treatment) and are transferred back to the referring hospital the same day. Previously there was no designated clinical area for these patients to wait over the course of their stay. Finding a safe space for patients was time-consuming and often inefficient. Patients were often accommodated in spare treatment rooms in the radiotherapy department or waiting areas, compromising comfort and safety, as well as access to analgesia, nursing and medical care.
