Abstract

Longitudinal and torsional vibrator combination-type ultrasonic motors in which the torsional vibrator rotates as a rotor have the ability to produce high torque. The purpose of this study is to further improve the performance of this type of motor. The motor was newly designed and improved in regards to the longitudinal vibration mode and the output method of its mechanical power. The longitudinal vibration mode, with one node on each of the longitudinal and torsional vibrators, is applied to control the friction force on the contact surface. This mode can cause repulsive collision of both vibrators. Consequently, the maximum torque and the maximum efficiency of the improved motor increased by 75% and 107%, respectively. Moreover, the input electric power for the longitudinal vibrator was remarkably reduced. Thus, improvement of this type of the ultrasonic motor was successful.
