Abstract

This paper proposed a novel internal model control (IMC) - PID design based pitch angle controller for a wind farm. The studied system consists an equivalent aggregated model of squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) driven by aggregated horizontal axis wind turbine connected to a 120 kV utility grid. The linearized model of wind turbine generator (WTG) unit using linear analysis Toolbox (MATLAB/SIMULINK) is obtained. For the controller design, the second order transfer function of the WTG is derived from the WTG step response. A time domain approach based on a nonlinear system subjected to a three phase short circuit fault on the bus near to the wind farm (WF) is performed. The transient responses of the studied system with initial design controller (PI controller) and proposed controller are presented. It has been observed from the comparative simulation results that the proposed pitch angle controller shows improved oscillation performance of a grid connected WF.
