Abstract

Approximate lumped-differential formulations for heat conduction in anisotropic media are presented, here illustrated for a fin-type example. The proposed formulation is as simple as the classical lumped system analysis, but considerably more accurate, since temperature gradients in the lumped direction are more adequately approximated. Results obtained fin are compared to the exact two-dimensional solution, as well as to the classical lumped system analysis, for a range of the governing parameters, aspect ratio, thermal conductivity ratios and Biot numbers. Illustrative results are reported for a general anisotropic material. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd
