Abstract
Chronic Kidney Disease is characterized by a slow and progressive decline in kidney function, with hemodialysis being an essential treatment in advanced stages. For the success and effectiveness of hemodialysis treatment, an effective vascular access is necessary. Considered the gold standard for providing efficient treatment with greater comfort and longevity, the arteriovenous fistula is preferable, but its maintenance requires proper self-care practices. Objective: To understand how the lack of self-care can impact complications associated with the arteriovenous fistula in hemodialysis patients. Method: This is an integrative review, in which articles were searched through the Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases (Scielo, Lilacs, and Medline) and PubMed, using combinations of the following indexed Health Sciences descriptors: ("self care" OR care) AND "Renal Dialysis" AND "Arteriovenous Fistula" AND Nursing. Results: The results highlight the need for educational interventions and practices aimed at specific self-care for the preservation of the arteriovenous fistula. Conclusions: A deficit in self-care practices related to the arteriovenous fistula is recognized. The relevance of the nursing professional in nephrology is emphasized, highlighting their central role in promoting self-care for the arteriovenous fistula
