Abstract

The role of biradicals in the initiation of polymerization has been reported. The results of a series of biradical trapping experiments are presented herein. These experiments were carried out to demonstrate the necessity of regarding the biradicals generated in the photodegradation of polymers as highly reactive species, capable of undergoing intermolecular reactions. Three different approaches used to examine the intermolecular activity were: laser photolysis, quantum yield studies, and initiation of polymerization. The results of the studies suggest that the reaction of biradicals in polymers are somewhat slower than in small molecules. (BLM)
