Abstract

AbstractTunnels, as underground constructions, are a solution for urbanized areas, as cities are subjected to high traffic volumes due to population increase. The present research aims to present the impact of different soil type on the circular tunnels structure. The rock load on the surrounding surface of tunnel lining is one of the most important factors that set the correct dimension of this challenging structure. In nature, different soil types occur on the length of a tunnel, their distribution depends on the climatic regime of the area. Using the arching theory as an empirical method of analysis, the study presents the influence of three types of soil on a circular section tunnel lining, with the determination of vertical and lateral pressures, ground reaction, bending moments and axial efforts, due to soil loads. The three types of soils taken into account in this research have different geotechnical properties such as specific gravity, angle of shearing resistance and rock strength coefficient.KeywordsTunnel constructionSoil profilesTBMDeep tunnels
