Abstract
Gasification is a leading feedstock recycling process for managing large volumes of post-consumer plastics waste. ICI Polyurethanes, Texaco and Gent University have conducted an experimental evaluation of adding polyurethanes from Dutch refrigerator waste to a mixed plastics gasifier feed. Results show that polyurethanes are an acceptable feedstock for gasification. Nitrogen in the polyurethanes is shown to be beneficial to the process, reducing the impact of chlorine content and giving a “gate fee” equivalent to mixed plastics waste. Details of the experimental work, process economics and commercial possibilities are given. Gasification is shown to be applicable to a wide range of polyurethanes waste streams.
